Skirius, John A. (11/18/2010)

John A. Skirius passed away on November 18, 2010 at his home in Los Angeles with his family at his side. Following Dartmouth, John received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1975 and taught Spanish/American literature at UCLA for over 30 years. A former student described John as a gracious and kind man as well as a renowned expert in his field. He spent much of his time in Mexico and wrote books and published essays on many influential Mexican writers and leaders. He was revered among his Mexican colleagues for his great knowledge of their country and culture.

 

Davies, Stephen A. (11/8/2010)

Stephen A. Davies died November 8, 2010 in Pelham, New York. While in high school Steve’s family moved to Beirut, Lebanon where he attended the American Community School. His experiences there would have lifetime influence on him. Following graduation from Dartmouth he studied Arabic at Princeton then served two years with the U.S. Army. He later received a Master’s degree in both Middle Eastern Studies and Journalism from the University of Michigan. In 1975 Steve returned to Beirut where he reported on the outbreak of civil war.

Husted, John (3/1/2010)

“John Husted passed away March 1, 2010 at his home in Treasure Island, Florida, from heart failure. He was the eldest son of Harold H. and Barbara R. Husted. John grew up in North Plainfield, NJ where he was valedictorian of his graduating class and a champion pole vaulter. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Sigma Nu Delta fraternity and he sang in the Glee Club. At the age of 23, while in graduate school, John developed chronic schizophrenia. This disease devastated his brain and thought processes, destroying his early promise.

In April of 2009, we learned through a letter to the Dartmouth D, that our Pioneering Nine was not a complete accounting. Dona Heller, who had taken Dartmouth classes while a Hanover High student, returned to campus during a leave from Bryn Mawr. Here is the letter:

"I am writing about the article about the "Pioneering Nine" -- Dartmouth's first coeds ("College welcomes back the 'Pioneering Nine,'" April 2). The nine women were drama students who enrolled for the 1968-1969 year to act in theater productions.
