Statement on the Passing of David Nichols, Jr.
We are deeply saddened at the loss of David G. Nichols, Jr. David was a Director of AdvisorShares Investments, LLC’s Executive Board, and a mentor and friend to me. David was just 65 when he died in a drowning accident in Kauai, where he was spending some quality time with his family. Those that met David know he was an integral part of the success of the firm. David helped guide me through some of the biggest challenges of my professional career, encouraging me to think more strategically while helping me find the emotional balance that can be a significant challenge in an entrepreneurial endeavor.
David was an incredibly successful lawyer spending most of his career at Morgan Lewis, working with some of the biggest firms in the world, including leading the team that sealed a $70 billion dollar joint venture agreement between the wireless operations of Bell Atlantic and Britain's mobile phone giant Vodafone AirTouch – at the time believed to be the largest joint venture transaction to date. What many don’t know was that David loved the performing arts, and while serving as a member of the professional staff of the U.S. Senate, he was a co‐founder of the renowned Capitol Steps, a troupe of D.C. staffers that put on satirical musical shows parodying politicians. While at Morgan Lewis, David co‐ founded Morgan Lewis’s own version of Capitol Steps – “The New York Players.” This group of their New York attorneys performed “locally” at various office events for years.
We are better off for having had David in our lives. He was gracious, kind and generous with his willingness to take me under his wing. David had a passion for creativity, and I am lucky he chose to not only help guide our path, but actively participate in our journey building and growing this business.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as he was a beloved son, husband, father and brother. I will forever be appreciative of the fact that I am a better person for having known him.
