On Sunday, February 27 at 3 pm Eastern Standard Time, our classmates Bruce Alpert and Peter Elias will host on Zoom a casual conversation on approaches to staying healthy.  Their description is below.  This discussion overlaps in significant ways with the casual conversation with Dick Glovsky and John Isaacson on how to be active and engaged in retirement.  One way, of course, to stay engaged and healthier thereby is stay in touch with your classmates.

If you wish to join in this casual conversation, please email me at Arthur.fergenson@ansalaw.com.

Class of ’69 Discussion: Improving Our Health and Life
Peter Elias and Bruce Alpert

Join us for a conversation about ways to make our coming years happy and productive, and perhaps more numerous. Although there is good evidence that lifestyle and social context are important factors, the evidence shows associations and not causation, so there is no way to be prescriptive. Instead, let’s share what approaches, barriers, and solutions each of us has found.  We can provide some framing and a small amount of data and try to keep the conversation somewhat focused, but will serve more as a guide by the side than a sage on the stage. Some things we might cover include:

  • Connectedness and relationships.
  • Exercise.
  • Spirituality.
  • Sleep.

The second part will focus on the pitfalls of Blood Pressure (BP) measurement in your care—how YOU need to take charge so that the BP values in your chart are CORRECT. You do NOT want to be treated for high BP if you don’t have it, or mistreated for a condition you have.
How do you know how to select a BP device for home use?

Proper technique includes:

  • 3-5 minute wait at rest before BP measurement
  • Proper size cuff
  • No talking by you or to you
  • Feet flat on floor; NO EXAM TABLE
  • Arm with cuff supported at heart level
  • Back supported by chair; NO EXAM TABLE
